Hello and happy Friday, my beautiful solopreneurs who are out there enriching the world with your gorgeous gifts. It's Debra and it's Figure it Out Friday, and I'm just going to try to drop a mini episode right now that offers you a practical, step-by-step kind of how-to, because I really am dedicated to doing that. I feel like that's what I wanted when I was first starting out. Growing and building an online business is just like tell me how to do it and tell me for free, because I don't have money to pay you yet. So, anyways, I hope that you find these little mini episodes that are kind of like step-by-step how-to useful. Obviously, if you do, guys, please rate the podcast and review it. I don't say that often enough and I'm learning the hard way that ratings and reviews kind of make or break people finding you in this business. So if you have 60 seconds, you can scroll to the bottom of the app you're listening to this in and just give me five stars if you like it, and or take a minute to write a quick review. It would literally mean the world to me. So, without further ado, solopreneurs, let me ask you a question. Have you ever struggled with any of the following? Number one. Endless to-do lists, right? Just a never-ending list of things that you need to do because you're the boss and feeling like there's limited time to effectively market things like a launch or a new product or a new offer that you come up with. Number two do you struggle with trying to grow the business while you're working inside of it and wearing every single hat? So this would be kind of like thinking about strategy versus just knocking the to-do tasks off your list. If you struggle with that, raise your hand. The to-do tasks off your list. If you struggle with that, raise your hand. And then the third one feeling like you're alone in making all those super big picture strategic decisions. If you answered yes to any of those, then this episode is for you. I'm going to share with you my 10-step process to strategize for an entire year ahead. That has absolutely transformed my business. I'm going to share it with you and then I'm going to invite you to join me to do it live. So let's go.
Okay, so the goal here is to eliminate this feeling like we're constantly behind on our own deadlines, or like we have to pass up on great opportunities or we're missing out on ways to get out in front of promotional opportunities, like I don't know if anybody here is trying to do a Black Friday sale or just thinking about the holidays coming and how you'd love to be able to promote some special holiday offer, but you just don't have it together. Or if you just feel like you're constantly juggling endless tasks to kind of keep the day-to-day going and you wind up doing that sort of stressful reactive planning. So the goal is to get out in front of that right To get so organized that you could kick off next year with a mapped out promotional calendar that would keep your business growing without burning you out, and there is a way to do that.
So first, let me just invite you to this incredible event that I'm hosting. It's called Plan and Envision 2025. This is an annual workshop that I have. This is going to be my fourth year offering this. It is free and it's a focused 90 minute workshop session. I'm asking people to book out the two hours. It's happening on December 2nd, from 1 pm to 3 pm Eastern Standard Time. Now, if you just heard that and you're like, but I work a full-time job, but I can't make it that day, don't worry, you can. Either you can register for the event anyways, it's totally free and you can get the replay for a limited amount of time or you can just listen to the next 10 minutes of this podcast, where I'm going to literally map out those 10 steps for you so that you know what they are. But let me promise you that if you come to this workshop and do it with me in person, it can really be a game changer for how you see your strategy for the coming year. So please join me, click the link, get in there. It is free. There is a VIP tier. I'm not going to. I won't hide that in the shadows. You can join, for $27, a VIP group that's going to get extra support, extra feedback, hands-on help with planning and strategy, but anyone is welcome to come to this for free.
If you are a solopreneur who would like to get a jump on strategy for your 2025 business events and promotional calendar, this is for you, okay, so why I started doing this? So, really briefly, you guys may or may not know some of you know me personally and you know that my first business was a mobile food vending truck in New York City. For those of you who have only ever maybe hearing me for the first time, or if you just only know me through this podcast, you may have heard this story, but if not, I'll just briefly tell you. I opened my first business as a holistic health coach and quickly realized I was way too green to be telling anybody else how they should live their life or eat or do anything like that, and so I decided to launch a product-based business. I got a partner. We decided to try and do something around food and service. We created New York City's first mobile juice truck. Created New York City's first mobile juice truck, and I could probably do an entire podcast just on that, but for the purposes of this it basically was an event-based business.
So the first three years in business, I mean, we made every mistake you could possibly make. We tried so many different things and even when we made large sums of money, we were just like it was draining out of our pockets because we were making so many costly mistakes. So it took us many years of trial and error to get profitable with this product-based business. And what I realized around year three was that there was some people that were willing to pay super high ticket for the same exact thing that other people were just going to grind and take. We would do the same amount of work and in one scenario we would be barely breaking even and in other scenarios we would get premium payments for them.
So it took me three or four years to really see this pattern evolve, because at first I was just j juggling all the balls right. I felt like I had no clarity, I had no vision, we were inconsistent, we were unfocused and guess what? We had no coach, we had no plan, we had nobody helping us. This is like total DIY business. So there was no accountability, there was no insight, there was no feedback. And that, right there, in a nutshell, is why I'm offering this to you right now, because I would love to help somebody not go through what we went through and spend three years to figure out what's profitable inside your business.
But with all that said, I started realizing I have to take detailed notes about what's working and what's not. I have to start really looking at the data. I have to check the numbers. So I started tracking at the end of every year. Okay, let's take a look back in hindsight, when hindsight is 20-20, where did we actually make money and where did we lose money?
Then it got like a little more refined. Wait a second. We made a lot of money, but we were miserable. Where did we make money and also feel ease? Where did we lose money? But maybe there was events where we were totally thrilled and excited and it was the best time of our entire lives. I remember we did an event one time down under the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo where it was like this wild street party and everybody was body painted and there was disco lights and we were this funky, all-girl juice truck out there in the middle of the night at this huge disco rave Best time of my life. Would do it again right now in a heartbeat if I could go back. Did not make any money, however, the vibe and the sort of like street cred and the promotional value of that was really kind of priceless, so would do again. Right, I went into the I would do it again column even though it wasn't profitable.
So we started to refine the process by which we decided what was good and what was bad for our business and, of course, leaning hard into those opportunities where you make good money, people respect you. It's within the integrity of your values, of your company. You feel like aligned. Yes, these people understand my product, my service, I'm working with partners here. This is like we're making the money we deserve, we're charging what we need to charge. We're delivering a quality service and product. We feel good. They feel good. We all shake hands and go home and get a good night's sleep. Those are really valuable experiences, and so we would start to kind of catalog those.
Then we would say, okay, so we want to do more of the good things that are profitable and feel good, but we want to spend less time doing it, how can we streamline? And after years and years and years. So at the end of every year we had to sit down together and evaluate how do we do, what do we do? What was good, what was bad, what worked, what didn't, where do we win, where do we lose? Then we would start to dream. We would specifically just open up a blank canvas and spend some time envisioning what growth looks like. What does it look like to do this again, but better to increase our income, to work less, to feel even more evolved? Who can we hire? How can we bring more people in and benefit others? Should we be doing more volunteer work? All of that stuff? So we would just start to kind of dream and envision and then from there we would sort of boldly scaffold out our dream set of events, our dream partners, and really kind of just envision who it is that we're calling into our life, who it is we're calling into our own being like. Who do I want to be this coming year? And that process, over many years of doing it, has gotten even more refined and even more refined, to the point where I so look forward to it every year.
It's a joyful sort of mini retreat that helps me feel like my business is A on track and I'm being clear eyed about what is kind of places where I might be losing money or failing, or it just helps you to kind of check you know what. Also, what season of life am I in? What's in alignment with what I want to call into my life? If you're somebody who's planning a family, you need to plan accordingly, right? You can't do this. It's not business as usual. You need to make space for bringing a new person into your life. If you're somebody who had your highest earning year ever and you feel like there's still more growth potential, you've got to evaluate where your wins and losses are.
So, with all of that said, that is what my plan and envision workshop offers to you. So it's designed to help you tackle some of the common struggles and give you like a foundation for your future success. So I want you to join me. There's a link that you can click and register. It's going to be fun. It's also going to be hella productive, like we get work done and you can meet other peers in your industry and you can meet me, and there'll be you know, there'll be some social activity as well, Okay, let me walk you through the 10 steps in the workshop so you can do this on your own. If you can't make it and but I still think you should register and get the video and the amazing, gorgeous guidebook that I'm going to give you, again for free. But if you can't make it or if you're just like, no, I don't want to be on yet another person's mailing list, which I totally get here are those 10 steps. Okay, I'm going to walk you through them right now. So hit, pause, get your notebook out and jot these down.
Step one you're going to look back and review your 2024 results. You have got to do this step so we can't just blindly move into strategy. You have to have data Now. If you are completely starting from scratch and you're brand spanking new and you didn't make any sales this year and you have no product or offer yet, then you can still do this, but with sort of a different lens. Maybe think about the things that light you up from your job or the people in your life that really brought you joy. Maybe look at areas of your life where you thought you spent too much time and got nothing out of it, or areas of your life where you invested time and or money and you got great results. It doesn't have to be just about your business, but for the purpose of business strategy, let's move forward as if you have a business that did some work this year and you have some data points You're going to talk about.
What was the best part of your year? What was the worst part of your year? What lit you up this year? What felt like it dragged you down? We're going to go through all of these journal prompts. What's the best part of running your business? Which tasks and events and experiences related to your business do you actually enjoy and which do you not enjoy? Got to ask yourself these things and it's kind of like getting clear. What is your zone of expertise right? What do you love to create? What do you hope you never have to do ever again? This stuff really matters when you're getting to the place in your business that you're going to become profitable, because learning to outsource tasks that drag you down is like a really powerful leveling up tool. You want to realize where your time would be better spent. Time is money. So, yeah, we're going to go through an entire series of journal prompts for step one, which is just a look back and review. We're going to get into looking back at your finances, your programs, your offers and at the end of that question it's just basically what do you feel was missing and what do you feel was really brought you the most growth? We will talk about revenue and overall expenses as well.
Then we move on to step two, and this is that brainstorm and dreamscape sort of a step. So I love this step so much because this is just a chance to be creative, to explore, to expand your capacity for what's possible and to dream really, really big. And I will challenge you to go bigger than you think is possible, to truly bust through your own mental limitations. So during step two, which is brainstorm and dreamscape, we're going to try and imagine that anything at all is possible for your life and for your business, like no limitations. There is zero. Nothing is holding you back Finances, no, people. Nothing in your life is going to be a barrier. It's all dissolved and you can have, be or do anything you want and with that lens, we're going to imagine what the future of your business looks like. So this is a fabulous exercise. Everyone should do this. Come do it with me. But really we're going to take some time to turn off distractions and focus on that, and I've got a whole list of prompts for that as well.
So, moving on to step three, then we start to design the year with intention. So we're going to build on that as well. So, moving on to step three, then we start to design the year with intention. So we're going to build on that. Step two. So for step three, we're going to lean into this concept that your feelings really matter just as much as your bank account and other markers of your success, which is atypical in quote, business, because business is about making money right. But feelings, while they don't pay the mortgage, they do help us stay motivated to show up and to stick to things when the going gets rough and when you feel like I can't do this today. So I ask you to trust me on this step three.
After literally 20 years in business, I wish I'd always approached my lifestyle and my business design by paying more attention to how things made me feel. I think it's very valuable. It's a very feminine approach to business. It's not very masculine, that's okay. That's who I am. It allows us to learn how to follow our gut, intuition and our instinct and prioritize how we want to feel about situations and people and business decisions. It matters. It matters how you feel. That's my spin on this.
So during step three, we're going to get really intentional about how we want to feel about income, about opportunities for growth, and we're going to take a look back at the list from step two and identify things that are money-making opportunities and then identify a separate list of things that are more just like growth opportunities. Okay, so you have different categories of areas that you want to put your intention that you have to prioritize some tasks inside your business that will earn you dollar bills, right. So doing sales and promoting your offers and making sure that your web pages and your social media all align to sell your product or service that stuff's really important. You also want to be doing things that simply just help grow your network, grow your community, and that don't necessarily result in dollar bills in your pocket, and so we'd separate those things out in step three. Step three is kind of like a big chunk of the workshop, actually, because everything is going to build upon these step two and step three practice. So during step three, I'm going to have you write out specific, detailed tasks and events and things and projects and ideas that you're going to do both to sell and earn money and also, separately, to attract your ideal client and grow your community. Two separate columns, two separate lists of ideas and strategies.
Step four we're going to create healthy boundaries to help shape your plan. So this is a huge one. It took me so many years to figure this out and it goes back to that idea that you look back and you realize there were some things that really drained me this year that I don't want to do again. So, as you're dreaming and scheming up of all of these things that you're going to say yes to in your coming year, it's just as important to get clear on things that you are going to say absolutely not, no way. It's just as important to get clear on things that you are going to say absolutely not, no way not me, not today, not ever so that you can carve out that space right. So, as entrepreneurs, it is so important that we set boundaries and protect our wellbeing. This is going to help us benefit in so many ways.
We declare our non-negotiables in step four, and that could look a lot of different ways. You know just a few of the benefits of setting up some non-negotiables. Number one you create more time for what you say you do want. Number two you don't get drained by the low energy or wrong fit tasks. Number four it's easier to make decisions knowing that there are just certain things that you just don't do. Like you just say no to working with certain types of companies or certain types of people, and then you spend a lot less time deliberating about whether or not you should take a client or a gig or a project or do a certain event, because you have a list of things that you just don't do and you stick to that list. So in step four, we actually get really clear about what we're no longer going to be accepting into our business. We set some boundaries. In step four, we actually get really clear about what we're no longer going to be accepting into our business. We set some boundaries. Powerful step, okay. Moving on to step five, love this step. We're going to actually declare our 2025 income. So if you haven't done this exercise before, my clients listening will tell you that we start Mindset to Market in the very first module. I have my clients declare their annual income and then I challenge them to go much bigger than they think is possible.
And the reason that we do this is because you need to know your goal, that you're headed towards. Whether or not you get to that goal in your first, second, third, fourth years in business isn't the point. It's that you're working towards a goal, a goal that's attainable, that you can break down into bite-sized pieces and move the needle towards, week after week, day after day, month after month. And what happens a lot of times is we just say like, oh, I just want to be able to help more people or I just want to set up my business, and we have these like sort of low stakes goals, but we don't think about the reality of what it means to be running a business is that it has to be something that you can afford to actually keep working at. So it means it has to include your larger picture lifestyle needs. And if you run the numbers for like your food, your travel, your wellness, your you know mortgage, your rent, whatever you have like for the entire year, your salary through your business needs to be that plus more, so you can put away money for taxes and money to save If you're not setting your income to be. You know the amount you need to survive, plus you know the amount you need to survive plus you know times 30% or more of that, then you're going to wind up operating at a deficit. So it sounds counterintuitive, but we need to set a goal financially that is actually going to match us feeling grounded and balanced, and so that's what we do in step five. I won't go deeper into that right now, but come to the workshop and enjoy that amazingly expansive exercise.
Step six is then we start to envision your path to get to that ideal income. So this is kind of like where we start girl mapping and we start to declare some detailed specifics about the coming year and we start to make some decisions. So we go back, we look at those lists that we made in step three right, those lists of three or five projects, or three or five ideas, three or five strategies, three to five offers that you wrote down in step three, and we're going to look at both the income generating projects and the audience building projects, and we're going to review them all and ask that question of how it feels. Now that we've had a little bit of time to get more clear. We're going to look back and say which of these truly excite you, that you're like, oh my God, if I could start that podcast this coming year, that would really be really good. Or if I could finally get that Etsy shop popped up and really get my earrings up online, like that's what I really. That lights me up. I really want that one. Out of all my ideas that I brainstormed, that's the one that I feel would be the most on my path. So we're going to look at those ideas that you generated and we're going to pick a handful of them that will A generate you the income that gets you to your goal, and B truly lights you up. You don't worry about how you're going to do it. You just decide which things you're going to do and, uh, you know I want also in this step, it's really important to keep in mind that, when it comes to making money, simple is always best, right.
You can decide on just one or two ways to earn money and then you can repeat those things over and over and over again multiple times in a year. So that's part of the point of doing this exercise is that we're going to pick some strategies for the year that really make sense, they feel attainable, they're measurable, they satisfy your soul. They check all those boxes and then you're going to commit to showing up and doing those things and rinsing and repeating once you get the system down. And repeating once you get the system down, excuse me. So in step six, we pick and choose the path to our annual income. And there's a lot more to it. We could do it in person, but that's the gist of step six is like kind of choosing our ideal path.
Step seven in the workbook, in the guide that I give you, there's an entirely blank calendar for all 12 months of 2025. And we actually start to put to broad strokes, lay down these promotional launches and offer ideas and start to think strategically about where we would place these things on our calendar. So you're going to add things in at first that are like your known NTS. Okay, my mom's 80th birthday is happening in March, so I can't really be launching a new course that day. So let's you know, make sure I have buffered time set up around, you know? Or for people who have a family and have kids, like summer is different than school year, right? So we start to block things out in buckets, that just broad stroke makes sense. Actually, using a calendar, that visual tool is critical. Getting things broad strokes put on your calendar it starts to get things out of your head. It gets things into a visual format. It's A I think it's fun, but B it's an incredibly powerful tool for, like, mind mapping. So in step seven we like do some calendaring.
In step eight, then we look back and we start to go okay, actually I didn't put in enough space to promote that launch. I need to move and shift that over a full week. Or ooh, so-and-so told me they wanted to partner with me. I should actually reach out to that person first and see if we could collaborate and then I might move that and we start to do some refining right? So, like, do these projects and money goals that I'm outlining here feel truly aligned with what I said I want to do, or who I say I want to be? And I would also say like, if you're growing and you're changing and you're evolving or if you're pivoting, you want to leave a little bit of space for the you who you're becoming. Like that sounds kind of esoteric, but we don't think strategically like that. We think like what's going to make me money, what's going to pay my bills? But I want you to, I invite you to say what's going to help me grow right, what's going to help me be happier that that stuff just goes missing in business. And I am here to shout from the rooftops. So let's schedule your joy right into the rest of your month and months and year right up there, along with business needle moving tasks.
Okay, so there's a whole series of questions in step eight that help you refine and review that plan. Even though you've done some rock stroke calendaring, you can print the calendar as many times as you need to to get it locked in, but you want to look back and say like, will these activities actually help me reach that goal? Are they going to help me grow my business? And another thing is like if you feel overwhelmed or unsure of what you've laid out, you know you really don't have to worry about that. This is like an initial draft that we're doing. But you can ask yourself then okay, if this feels overwhelming, I'm going to trust my instinct on that what would make this fit better? Should I add more space? Should I charge more? Should I bring in a support member on my team to make this less stressful. That's how we start to strategically think what's going to make me, how am I going to get this done and make that that large annual salary that I desire?
Okay, and then, in step nine, is my, is my other favorite part of this process. Can I have more than one favorite? Which is to visualize. So you could do this part. Um, you should do this part, I think. Anyways, whether you do the entire nine step, 10 step process or not, um, I love this piece which is to really create like a visual, like a vision board. Right, you could do this digitally or you can do it like with the good old fashioned scrapbook version. Um, I do have a great podcast episode about how to make your own vision board. If you want to go listen to that, I'm looking for the episode right now how to create an oh, episode 35, how to make a new moon vision board, and, uh, I talk about visualization and another in an earlier episode as well. So give those a listen. Um, because I the power of visualization is just like cannot be underestimated and, as you, as a creative solopreneur, you want to tap into that and take advantage of that. Okay, back to the steps. So we do that.
In step nine, it's making your annual vision board. What are the things that you're calling in? What are the big strokes? You've got your calendar, but you've also got like pictures cut out of magazine or placed together on a digital vision board using Canva however you want to make it, but you're going to hang that vision board in plain sight in your office and you're going to use it to remind you that you created a strategic plan for 2025 and you have it mapped out on a calendar. I've had people actually pin the entire calendar to their wall. I love this plan. I'll share in that step a bunch of other ways to do visualization exercises that are really powerful and really.
Step 10 is just. If you come to the workshop, you will find that you're going to want to do chunks of this. You're going to give yourself more space and time. So in step 10, I just ask you to commit to finishing this process so you know you're going to look back and say you know what this is so valuable. Anywhere that you felt there was an unfinished business like you want to go back and fine tune, whether that's in the ideas and strategy brainstorm session, whether it's in the part where you allow yourself to dream whether it's in the look back and really do a better, more detailed, like you know, profits and losses, um for the year, but whether it's, like you know, refining the space on your calendar, or whether it's your vision board, you're probably going to want to spend more time than the 90 minutes because it's so valuable for your business. So I'm just going to ask you, in step 10, to totally commit to finishing this process and to write down the date by when you're going to finish it and then send that to me so I can literally email you and hold you accountable, and or you're going to find an accountability partner who is going to do it with you if you don't get that done during our time together. So the 10-step process it's pretty robust. The workshop itself is fun, it is productive, it's going to get you motivated, it's going to inspire you, it's aspirational and it's a strategy workshop. So it's something that a lot of solopreneurs don't do on their own. So that's why I invite you to do it with me.
So those steps in a quick review. Let's just recap really quickly. Step one look back and review your year, your year in review, basically your P and L statement, but more than just money. Step two brainstorm and dreamscape. Step three design with intention right, we're going to get really intentional dreamscape. Step three design with intention right, we're going to get really intentional. Step four set boundaries, non-negotiables. Step five declare your annual income. Step six envision your path, so we're going to map it out. Step seven actually move that visual path onto your calendar and put it down in blocks on your calendar. Step eight review, refine, revise. Step nine visualize. And step 10, commit to this process so you can actually see it truly work for you in the coming year. It's a lot and I know it's not like a simple commitment to make, but here's what I will promise you If you join me to do this, even if you don't finish every step or even if you feel like I don't know what I'm doing, I promise you this will shift the way you set goals for 2025, the way your income structure, the way that you see the value between how you feel versus what you earn Like.
There's a lot of nuggets of gold in this workshop. As I said, I've been doing this for years. This is the fourth time I'm doing it with a free public group of other entrepreneurs, and I will just say last year we had so much fun and also I got emails from people like months and months and months later like well into 2024, I got emails from people saying like yo, I'm using this strategy and it's working. Like this helped me so much because I actually thought through so many things that I normally would have just like flung spaghetti at the wall and hoped it would work. And this time I feel like I have a plan. I thought it through, I attached a dollar amount to my plan. I'm tracking things more differently, so it works, it works, it works. It worked for me. It helped me get profitable. You guys, it helped me get profitable.
That's all I'm going to say, and you can certainly make it your own too, like I'm going to give you my steps, my version of my workshop adapt this to your own business, adapt this to your own lifestyle, take it and run with it. So, once again, it's December 2nd, that's a Monday. It is the day after the new moon and a very powerful time to set intentions. If you follow the lunar cycles, it's a great time to set intentions and to plant seeds. It's a two hour. It's really 90 minutes, but I'm going to space it out with like bio breaks and chances for people to kind of chill out for a second, and so a book two hours.
If you want to do the VIP group, you can please join me inside that VIP group. It's going to be a separate zoom. We're going to meet right after the workshop at 3 PM for an additional hour of feedback, support, q and A. It's going to be kind of like hot seat coaching where you can say, hey, here's what I'm thinking, what do you think about this. But that's not enough time to do that for everybody. That's a VIP.
So what I'm offering to the VIP group is that you have up to three months to submit your promo calendar, your your marketing strategy for the 2025 year, and I will give you personalized support, feedback, coaching, suggestions, edits, anything like what you, what you're looking. You can help tell me what you're looking for and I will help you with that, because I know the value of that. So, and you're also going to get lifetime access to the actual video and there's an additional training that I'm giving to the VIP group. You guys, I hope you join me for the free workshop. I hope you join me inside VIP and take advantage of that special offer. But even if you can't do either of those things, oh, register for free at the link in my bio or in the show notes or anywhere on any of my socials. It's on my website, it's everywhere.
